Mini Belt Hatchet
Developed by Lennart Pettersson (LP) at Gränsfors Bruks in Sweden. Lennart, axe smith, knife smith, back-packer and fisherman has created a little hatchet which can be used as an axe and a knife. The poll, slightly rounded, functions like a "priest".
The roots of Gränsfors Mini Belt Hatchet go back many thousand years. In the old days in Europe it was common to carry a belt axe which could be used as a knife and an axe, a valuable tool and a weapon. A nice belt axe was also a symbol of status. In the 16th and 17th century, the French began trading axes with the American Indians. The small Belt Axe, light and narrow, become the "trade axe" and was transformed into the tomahawk. But Gränsfors Mini Belt Hatchet is neither a tomahawk nor a scaled down axe. It is a functional new design by Lennart Pettersson. It is hand forged of high carbon Swedish steel and tempered at the bit to a hardness of 57 Rockwell C. To forge a small axe with the hole in the head requires great craftsman skill.

The Gransfors Bruks Mini Belt Hatchet is another great product from Gransfors Bruks. I set on the fence for a long time before purchasing this as I really liked my GB Wildlife Hatchet and didn't think this would be any kind of improvement for me. Still something kept drawing me to it. I had read several reviews of people who purchased it, got rid of it and then wanted one again for bushcrafting task.
This thing is ultralite and small but has a really big attitude. Besides not having as much weight behind it as the Wildlife hatchet, this thing can do just about anything I want it to. Its smaller size though make it better for about 90% of the bushcrafting task I do. Its great a knife replacement as its shaving sharp and I have been carving with it. It can do it all but its a little slower at chopping again because it doesn't have as much weight behind it. The weight though is very nice when carrying or packing it.
Great for camping and bushcraft chores. If I could only have one hatchet it would probably still be the Wildlife just do to chopping ability. Having both though, I will use this one a good bit more than the Wildlife hatchet. Get both if you can, lol.
This was my first experience buying from Rutabaga and it was an excellent experience. Easy and man was their shipping ultra fast. Great place to do business and as I add to my Gransfors Bruks collection these guys will be my go to company.
