There's a tendency to look at these as only boat lifts...and they work great for that. They are also great for storing luggage boxes in the rafters of the garage. The hardware is bombproof and the concept for how they work is ingenious. I use three of them at home in my garage (okay, "garage") that is now used for boat storage and my workshop. Hasn't seen a car in 8 years.

This is my favorite method of boat storage. If you have the ceiling clearance, then there isn't a better solution. With the hoister, a single person can easily lift a boat much higher than they can reach. A must for boats that seem to get heavier every year.

Harken is best known the world over as the premier supplier of hardware to sailors. Their lift brings safety and ease to getting your kayak or canoe or... up to (and down from) the rafters. Their customer service folks can and will answer your install questions, if any, most any day of the week.

The Harken Hoister system is a very slick way to store your boat without taking up valuable garage floor space. It comes with everything you need to set up a secure system that will be much easier on your boat and back than anything else. Just follow the simple instructions and you will be able to hoist anything between 60 and 200 lbs (depending on which model you have). My dad uses the 200 lb one to keep his huge fake Christmas tree out of the way.
Don't worry about lifting a heavy boat--the pulley system gives you a significant mechanical advantage. Remember physics class? If you need a place to store a boat safely, don't risk it, do it the easy way with a Harken.

My garage is probably like yours. Really full of really fun stuff. The hoister is an amazing product. It gave me my garage back. My beloved strip canoe now lives high in the rafters up an out of the way. As an extra added benefit it provides a lofty home for all my paddling related gear. But when its time to go, it magically lowers itself onto my car. What a deal!
