Katadyn
Vario Dual Technology Microfilter
Description
The Vario combines individual efficiency with the simplest possible handling to produce the fastest water filter on the market. Anyone who needs up to two liters of drinking water per minute can use the glass fiber and active charcoal filter. If the water is extremely cloudy, the ceramic pre-filter can be fitted in a moment in order to extend the service life of the glass fiber filter. The Vario is compatible with standard outdoor bottles and hydration bladders.

The Vario's dual action pump and filter options make it the best water filter I have used. In the "fast flow" mode (where you are utilizing only the fiber/charcoal filter) I can usually fill a 32 oz. bottle in a minute or less. In cases where the water has more sediment or I am more concerned about contaminants, I switch to the "longer life" setting, which forces the water through a ceramic disc filter first. In this mode, you must pump more slowly or the pressure will overwhelm the O-ring inside the Vario. Even so, in the "longer life" mode, the Vario is still a fast filter. I personally find the pump action of the Vario easier than some other models and I like that the base screws directly onto most wide-mouth water bottles. There is an optional output hose for use with other containers. I seem to get more life out of the filter cartridges than I have with other systems, as well. The Vario is on the large side for a filter, which may rule it out for ultra-light backpackers, but for canoe camping or as part of an emergency kit it is an excellent piece of equipment.

The detail that sets the Vario apart from other outstanding filters on the market is its speed. The quick flow setting allows you to filter water at a fantastic rate - easily twice as rapid as the filter I own. Although I am very fond of my slower filter, there is something to be said about quickness when the bugs are biting or the weather is unfavorable. I did find that the Vario leaks a bit more than I am used to, but it is one seriously quick water filter thanks to working on both the in and out actions of the pump lever.
