Precision machined parts resist build-up of sand and debris, enhancing the life and performance of the product. Deployment is effortless due to the tension spring mounted in the rudder itself. Retraction is also made easy due to the single line, dual action mechanism in the Blade Housing. The blade pivot point on the SmartTrack Control System blade housing is significantly lower than on all over-the-center rudders. This allows the use of a smaller rudder blade. This results in more than 50% less windage when in the retracted position. The unique tension spring assures you that the Foil Blade is down in the water, not trailing behind. Tighten the tension spring when in rough conditions or surf landings and loosen in stable conditions or when paddling along coastal areas with significant amounts of kelp.
This component of the SmartTrack system is like stealth technologyit looks like a hunk of black metal, but it's actually a very sophisticated piece of equipment. This is where it starts to matter which kayak you're putting the thing on, so pay attention.
The function of the blade housing is to attach the rudder blade to your kayak, and to accommodate most of the common kayaks on the market. Some of the SmartTrack housing features:
Easy single-cord retraction
Precision machined and Teflon coated for smooth, precise performance
Lower pivot point allows use of smaller blade
Adjustable blade tension
Versions to fit most any Kayak

Top Mount - Short Pin The short pin style is typically used on kayaks the have a horizontal or step down flat area in the rear deck. Existing rudders are normally held down with a truss head screw.
Top Mount - Long Pin The Long pin style is typically used on rotomolded kayaks or kayaks with a small extended section on the rear of the kayak. This extended section has a vertical pin all the way through for a tiller pin. Some models may use a metal casting which attaches to the rear of the kayak.
Rear Mount The rear mount style works on a kayak with flat, vertical transom. Usually the kayak has nuts embedded for a bracket attachment. Some brackets will work with the SmartTrack housing.
Bayonet Pin Blade Housing The bayonet pin blade housing is suitable for kayaks that have had a sleeve inserted into the rudder pivot hole on the stern of the kayak. This sleeve and the shape of the Bayonet Pin allow this housing to insert and lock in place. Sleeve is not included; typically installed in kayak by manufacturer at the time the kayak is built.
Threaded Long Pin Blade Housing The threaded long pin blade housing is suitable for kayaks with a pivot hole that extends all the way through the stern. Examples would be older style Wilderness System or Perception Kayaks as well as many others. A Nylock nut threaded onto the tiller pin retains the blade housing. All hardware is included.
