10 Years is Too Old for a Reference Book   rating
In its time, this was the “go to” information & map guide for river paddling. Its time, however, has passed. This revision was copyrighted in 2010; being nearly ten years old really strains its usability as a reference. Compared with the 2004 revision -focusing on the four rivers for our 2019 “must paddle list”- with the exception of a brief mention of a paddling shop no longer in business, I could discern no differences between the 2010 and 2004 editions. The 2004 revision is more substantial (for carrying in the boat.)The cover, commentary and maps are printed on a heavier gauge, brighter paper. The current edition feels as if printed on newsprint; it won’t survive a wet trip. This, then, is a one or two star book at best. I am unable to recommend it. Fortunately,Rutabaga shelves “Canoeing & Kayaking South Central Wisconsin: 60 Paddling Adventures Within 60 Miles of Madison” authored by Timothy Bauer. As this review is on the Svob book, I will only say that the Bauer book provides excellent maps and more extensive information in its commentaries. Additionally, the Bauer book has linear connect with which augments and amplifies the information contained in the book. Thank you for reading this review .. . hopefully it will be helpful.
